How to Make Mountains for a Miniature Scene

Whatever the reason, you can craft a mountain to your own specifications very easily, even if you have no experience with building models. There are many different methods that require wooden forms, chicken wire or modeling clay, but a mountain can also be created with old newspapers and a little bit of creativity.

Instructions

Rip the newspaper sheets in half. Wad each piece of newspaper so that they have a rounded top and an irregular bottom. Stack the wadded newspaper pieces until you have the size and shape of mountain you require. Use masking tape to hold the pieces together. Make it as large or as small as you want.

Use a straight edge to tear strips of newspaper. Make paper mache by mixing one part water, one part flour and two tbsp. of salt in a bowl. Soak one strip of newspaper in the paper mache mix, then run the strip between two fingers to remove the excess liquid. Place the strip on the top of the mountain. Soak another strip, and add it to the mountain by slightly overlapping on the first strip. Continue to add strips until none of the base of crumpled paper and tape is visible. Allow the mountain to dry overnight before you decorate it.

Paint the mountain in different colors of green, grey and brown to simulate grass, rocks and dirt. Matte paint will have a more realistic effect, rather than a shiny gloss paint. Sprinkle colored sawdust on the paint while it is still wet, to add texture. Use green sawdust on the green paint, grey sawdust on the grey paint and brown sawdust on the brown paint.
