Things You'll Need
Instructions
Get wild with color. Sprinkle colorful pieces of furniture to spice up your apartment. If the studio appears ancient and rusty, the contrast of old and new will produce an attractive, artsy vibe for all visitors.
Be a neat freak. Hide clutter in containers. Keep your place organized by storing clothing and linens in wicker baskets or steamer trunks. Sweep daily and clean up after yourself. When living in a small space, the smallest clutter can take several feet off your apartment's size.
Play with light. Refrain from using draperies and leave the windows bare. Covering windows with blinds and curtains makes the room appear small and dark. If you prefer to use draperies, use sheer curtains so light can shine into the apartment. Place large mirrors along the walls. The light will bounce off the mirrors and make the inside of the studio appear larger.
Make use of every inch of your apartment. Use the space under your bed as storage instead of a bureau or an extra closet. Try to get furniture that serves as many purposes as possible. For example, find chairs that have storage in them or bookcases that can hold not only books, but your stereo and laptop as well.
Avoid low tables and bureaus. Buy furniture with legs that are high off the floor. Similar to the effect of high ceilings, tall furniture makes the space look bigger.
Tell a story inside your apartment. Out of four walls, color one a different shade. This will create a focus toward that area and add to the illusion of space. Place a series of themed photos on the wall to give the studio a specific feeling. If you are into the outdoors or the beach, pictures relating to these topics would bring your personality into the studio.
Incorporate a simple design that will flow with the essential accessories that you already have. Define areas in your apartment so you can know exactly what belongs where and how to decorate every section. When a visitor comes in, every part of the studio should have a clear purpose. Separate sections allow the studio to be a functional living space instead of one big room with a ton of things in it.
