How to Replace a 24V Transformer

A 24-volt transformer has a number of uses. Some are used in battery chargers and others can be used in low-voltage lighting. While these units can last a long time, eventually they will burn out. Replacing a 24-volt transformer requires a little research. The objective is to replace the existing transformer with a high-quality replacement part to ensure a long life. This will keep the transformer functioning properly and the load from being damaged.

Instructions

Shut off power to the transformer at the main breaker. Locate the wiring schematic or transformer documentation. Take this information to a transformer supplier so they can match up a replacement unit. If you have to take the old unit with you for the match up process, take pictures or draw a sketch of how the existing transformer is wired. Once you have the new unit, label the voltage output of each wire coming off the transformer. Do this also for the old transformer.

Match up the wires of each transformer by looking at the voltages of each wire. Use the wire cutters to cut the old transformer wires. Strip one-half inch of insulation off of each wire and splice the old wire -- the one that does not connect to the old transformer -- to the new transformer wire. Perform this step for each of the old transformer wires until all of the wires have been connected to the new transformer. Work on one old wire and one new wire at a time to avoid confusion.

Unbolt the old transformer and pull it out. Install the new connected transformer and bolt it into position. Turn the power back on and test the transformer.
