10 Filter Funnels in Everyday Use

You may not realize it, but filter funnels are all around you. These cylindrical objects help with a myriad of functions and are used every day for handling liquids. Filter funnels are effective for keeping liquid substances contained to where they are supposed to go, so the liquid does not splash out, creating a mess. To understand more about how filter funnels are used, try identifying where you see them throughout the day.
  1. Coffee Machines

    • Many coffee machines use a filter funnel to allow the water to saturate the coffee beans and drip the liquid coffee out and into the carafe. Some of these coffee filters are made out of plastic, while others rely on a paper cone lining.

    Automobiles

    • If you ever need to change the oil in your vehicle, you will have to rely on a filter funnel to pour the oil into so it goes directly into your engine. A filter funnel gives you a wide opening to pour the new oil into, and then funnels the oil into a stream that flows right to the engine.

    Laboratory Uses

    • Science and research labs use filter funnels to transfer liquids from larger containers into small containers with thinner openings or necks. Two types of filter funnels may be used in laboratories: stemmed and stemless.

    Pharmaceutical

    • Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians rely on filter funnels for pouring pills, tablets and liquid medicine into jars and containers for patients. A filter funnel can also help a pharmacist make sure no pills or tablets accidentally escape during the merging of the containers.

    Breast Pumps

    • Breast pumps, which are used by nursing mothers, take on the shape and function of filter funnels. The breast is inserted into the large section of the pump, which funnels the milk from the breast down through a small hole in the filter to end up in the container or bottle.

    Solids Separation

    • Industrial, automobile and other manufacturing industries use filter funnels for separating solids from liquids. Solids separation is the process of sifting the solids that are combined with liquid in a filter funnel, so only the liquid drips out at the spout.

    Animal Feeding

    • Plastic filter funnels can be used to feed liquid nutrients or water to baby animals. The baby animal latches on at the spout of the funnel and sucks the liquid down. Or the liquid can be squeezed down by the feeder, depending on the type of filter funnel that is used.

    Medical Procedures

    • Certain medical procedures require the use of filter funnels. For instance, if oxygen needs to be pumped into a patient, a filter funnel may be placed over the oxygen hose so the oxygen gas is concentrated and streams right into the patient, where the doctors want it to go. Filter funnels can also be used for medicinal drips that go into a patient intravenously.

    Baking

    • Filter funnels are used by bakers for applying icing to baked goods. The filter funnel is filled with the icing and is squeezed through the small hole to come out at a particular width onto the baked good. This allows bakers to write on cakes or create intricate designs in the frosting.

    Rock Cleaning

    • A filter funnel helps people who look for gemstones or special rocks sift the dirt through the funnel so they can separate the dirt from the rocks. This is part of the rock-cleaning process, which prepares the rocks to be polished.
