How to Make Sand Spikes

Shore fishermen know that laying your fishing pole on the ground near your favorite fishing spot can be a pain. Sand gets in the reels and weeds tangle your fishing line. Sand spikes offer a solution. The hollow tubes give you the spot to rest your pole without placing it on the ground. Many fishing stores sell sand spikes, but you can make your own for a fraction of the cost.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the PVC pipe in half at a 30-degree angle with a hacksaw.

    • 2

Sand the cut edges of each sand spike with 100-grit sandpaper to remove any rough edges. Switch to 300-grit newspaper to create a smoother edge.

    • 3

Measure down from the uncut edge on each sand spike to decide where you want your rod to rest in the pole. Ideally, you want your pole to rest so the reel connection is at least 1 to 2 inches above the top of the sand spike. Mark the spot.

    • 4

Drill a hole through the PVC pipe from one side to the other.

    • 5

Thread a bolt through one hole and secure it on the other side with a wing nut.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 with the second sand spike.
