How to Check the Springs on a Ski-Doo

A snowmobile can take you places that are nearly impossible to reach by walking. It does this with a track, skis and a robust suspension system. The suspension is important to reduce driver fatigue on long trips. Inspecting this system on a regular bases assures each trip goes smoothly. The main components of the suspension is the shocks. These hydraulic cylinders absorb the bumps in the trail. When they compress, the springs on the shocks return them to the extended position.

Instructions

    • 1

Look closely at each shock for signs of rust or corrosion. Repaint rusted shocks with rust-resistant paint to extend the service life. There are typically three springs on a snowmobile -- two located on the front of the machine in the suspension arms for the skis, and one under the track of the snowmobile.

    • 2

Grab each spring and check for tightness between the spring hat and the spring seat. The spring should be tightly wedged and not move. These are the two metal pieces that the spring rests in on either end.

    • 3

Check that the spring is seated in the spring hat. The inside edge of the spring hat should be completely inside the spring. If the spring is slightly outside this groove it needs to be corrected.

    • 4

Push down on the suspension of the snowmobile and look to see how the shocks return to their fully extended position. They should rebound quickly and smoothly.
