How to Do Makeup Prosthetics

Prosthetic makeup, when done correctly, can be an artform. Latex or foam shapes are effective ways to create an entirely new look, and can look very natural and realistic. Prosthetics can be an effective choice for a variety of situations, including film projects or Halloween. Regardless of the shape or size of the prosthetic, a simple process can be followed for secure wear.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the skin that will hold the prosthetic thoroughly with astringent or mild soap and water. Dry completely.

    • 2

Place the prosthetic on the area for application. Adjust the positioning now, before you apply any glue.

    • 3

Dab the cotton ball into the baby powder, then pat the cotton ball around the edges of the prosthetic piece. Remove the prosthetic, revealing a guide for where to place the piece once the glue is on. If the prosthetic involves contact lenses, apply them now.

    • 4

Apply glue across the center of the piece, then stipple glue around the edges.

    • 5

Securely set the prosthetic inside the baby powder edges. Press firmly for about 10 seconds. Carefully trim any rough edges from the prosthetic.

    • 6

Apply a thin layer of prosthetic glue around the edge to create a seamless seal to the skin.

    • 7

Apply the flesh tone makeup to blend the prosthetic into the skin. Add darker tones to creases in the piece to imitate natural discoloration. Add similarly dark tones in small patches to create freckles or age spots as desired.
