How to Make a Backlash With Rope

Backlash is a word with different meanings in different contexts -- it can even have two very different definitions with respect to ropes. Backlash can be either the result of a rope snapping under strain, or a rope that is actually lashed back upon itself using an end splice. While the first type of backlash is a dangerous accident with potentially disastrous results, the second sort of backlash can be very useful in preventing a rope from unraveling.

Instructions

    • 1

Unlay the end of the rope, pulling the three strands apart to a length of 5 or 6 inches.

    • 2

Cross the first strand over the second. Loop the second strand over the first and lay it over the third. Loop the third strand over the second and insert it into the first strand's loop. Pull all three tight, resulting in a crown knot with the three equidistant strands hanging down along the body of the rope.

    • 3

Lift one of the strands of the rope just below the knot with a nail or marlinspike and insert the first strand into the gap, pulling it through. Repeat with the other two strands, working counterclockwise.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 three more times, resulting in four tucks for each strand. If performed correctly, all three strands should still be hanging equidistantly. Cut off any remaining slack.
