How to Make a Pepper Grinder

A pepper grinder is a device that is used to grind small peppercorns into fine particles for use on top of a salad or in other types of foods. The mechanism that grinds the peppercorns is called a grinding mill. If you plan to make your own pepper grinder, you will need to obtain this mechanism. You then need to design the body of the pepper grinder from a piece of round wood stock.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-inch by 2-inch by 12-inch round wood stock

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the piece of round wood stock with the tape measure. Make a mark at 8 3/4 inches using a pencil.

    • 2

Cut the round wood stock at this mark with the miter saw. You will now have an 8 3/4-inch piece and a 3 1/4-inch piece. The long piece will be the base and the short piece will be the cap.

    • 3

Measure and cut the 3 1/4-inch piece to 2 3/4 inches.

    • 4

Drill a 1 5/8-inch hole 3/8 of an inch deep into one end of the 8 3/4-inch piece of round stock with the power drill. Drill a 1-inch hole through the center.

    • 5

Drill a 1/4-inch hole through the center of the 2 3/4-inch piece of round stock. Drill a 1/8-inch hole into one end.

    • 6

Insert the turnplate for the grinding mill mechanism into the 1/8-inch hole on the end of the cap. Drill pilot holes for the mounting screws. Insert the screws into the holes and tighten with the screwdriver.

    • 7

Insert the spring bar for the grinding mill mechanism into the bottom of the base. Insert the female end into the spring bar and push into place.

    • 8

Slide the male end of the grinding mill mechanism over the shaft and then over the spring bar. Push the shaft through the spring bar and the female end.

    • 9

Set the retainer bar of the grinding mill mechanism onto the bottom of the base. Drill pilot holes for the mounting screws. Insert the screws into the holes and tighten with the screwdriver.

    • 10

Place the cap onto the top of the shaft. Attach the knob and tighten to secure.
