How to Cut Drilling Oil

Drilling oils, or cutting oils, function as a lubricant in machine shop operations, such as drilling. A variety of oils are available for this purpose. Some are mixed with water, chemical agents or possess high sulfur levels. Cutting oils are sold ready to use. There is no need to mix, or cut, store-bought cutting oils with any other substance. Lubricants, such as cutting oils, should be used when drilling glass, stone and many types of metal. Cutting oils protect your tools and the object you're drilling. It is possible to mix your own cutting oil for drilling if you'd like.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out 4 gal. of water and pour it into a clean 5-gal. bucket. The water acts as a coolant during drilling.

    • 2

Add 3 cups of liquid dish washing soap to the water. Stir the soap into the water and allow soap suds to dissipate. The soap acts as a catalyst, allowing the water and oil to mix properly.

    • 3

Pour 1 qt. of motor oil into the bucket. Mix the oil and the soapy solution thoroughly. The oil acts a lubricant during drilling.
