How to Manually Choke an ATV

Going off-road riding on an ATV is a hobby the whole family can enjoy. Modern ATVs use direct fuel injection into the motor's cylinders. As a result, this style of ATV can't be choked because the computer controls the fuel delivery. Older ATVs have carburetors that mix the fuel and air before it is delivered to the motor for combustion. When starting an older ATV, you may need to choke the carburetor in order to fire the engine.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the choke control on the ATV. This is a lever that is commonly located near the ATVs key. The handle of the lever is usually marked "Choke."

    • 2

Pull the lever all the way up to apply full choke. Full choke is used when the motor is "cold" and hasn't run for several hours.

    • 3

Pull the lever up halfway to apply half-choke. Half-choke is typically used when the motor is already warm from running.

    • 4

Allow the engine to run for 30 to 60 seconds then turn the choke off by pressing the lever down.
