How to Make a Spool Knot With Paracord

The spool knot is the knot used to tie fishing line to the spool of a fly fishing reel, or any other fishing reel. This knot is also known as the arbor knot. It is designed to prevent the fishing line from pulling off of the spool and also helps secure the line so that the fishing line can wind around the spool without slipping. This type of knot also works to hold any rope around a smooth, rounded object, and it is ideal for winding paracord around a cylindrical object.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread the end of the cord around the spool. Pull up both ends of the cord to make a loop. Make the loop at least 6 inches long.

    • 2

Loop the loose end of the cord around the back of both sides of the loop, around the front of the cord and through the circle you just created with the end of the cord. This will form an overhand slip knot. Leave the knot loose for now.

    • 3

Make a second overhand knot in the loose end of the cord. Tighten the knot.

    • 4

Pull on the long end of the loop gently. Pull the long end until the smaller knot butts against the larger knot and the larger knot is secured around the spool. Wind the paracord around the object as necessary to secure the rest of the cord.
