How to Make a Gauge Rod

A gauge rod is most commonly used by bricklayers to make sure they maintain the same level on both ends of a wall. It is used to mark out regular, but non-standard, intervals of measurement. In the case of the bricklayer, the height of a modern layer of brick is 75 mm plus 10 mm for the mortar, so each mark on the gauge rod is 85 mm from the next. Gauge rods are often made at home by do-it-yourself enthusiasts. For example, if you're laying 10-inch tile, you can make your own gauge rod with 10-inch intervals to make sure you're properly spaced on each side of the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the distance needed between each marking on your gauge rod.

    • 2

Use the measuring tape to measure the distance from the bottom of the flat stick to where you want to place the first interval. Use the marker to mark that spot.

    • 3

Measure the same distance from the first mark to the next interval. Mark that spot with the marker. Continue until you have fully marked the stick.
