Molding sheet metal allows you to be creative by making pieces of art. Sheet metal typically is thin and pliable and can be molded easily into a variety of shapes. To do this, you need to cut out a design from the metal. Cutting the sheet metal can be done with a hand tool or electric tools.

Instructions

    • 1

With a pencil, make a sketch on paper of the design you want to mold from a piece of sheet metal. Use multiple sheets, if necessary, for a design that is larger than a single piece of paper. Take into account cutting out larger shapes so you can twist and turn the metal to form three-dimensional shapes.

    • 2

Cut out the design from the paper with the scissors and place it on the piece of sheet metal. Trace the design on the sheet metal with a felt tip marker.

    • 3

Cut the design from the metal with the tin snips. If you do not want to use tin snips, you can also cut the sheet metal using an angle grinder with a metal cutting wheel. File the cut edges smooth with a metal file.

Bend the cut design of the sheet metal with a pair of pliers or use your hands. For some shapes, place the metal design over a hard, round object, and strike the metal with a hammer to shape it.
