How to Test an ATV Resistor

An ATV can take you deep into the wilderness through very difficult terrain. To avoid a long walk home it is important to maintain your ATV's mechanical and electrical components. One of these is the resistor, which is an electrical device that adds load to the circuit and drops the current. Different types of resistors vary the voltage and output to the needs of the machine. Testing this resistor is done with a multimeter.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the resistor by unplugging it from the electrical system. Do this by prying up the locking mechanism using a flat-head screwdriver and pulling the harness apart.

    • 2

Look on the resistor for its printed Ohms range. This is the value beside the symbol "Ω".

    • 3

Set the multimeter to read "Ohms" and adjust its range, using the dial, so that the resistor's ohms capacity is within the meter's range.

    • 4

Place the red meter lead on one of the wires and the black meter lead on the other wire. If the meter's display is showing the same value indicated on the resistor it is in working order. If the value is different, replace the resistor with a new part.
