How to Pull-Start an ATV

An all terrain vehicle's off-road capabilities allow you to go places that would be difficult to reach on foot. Before you head out on the trail, learn how the ATV operates and handles on rough terrain. One of the crucial parts to the ATV is the ignition. While most ATV's have an electric starter, it maybe necessary to pull-start the unit if the starter becomes disabled, the battery is dead, or you have an older machine that is not equipped with the automatic starter.

Instructions

    • 1

Lock the ATV's parking brake in the "On" position. This is typically done by pulling the brake lever and pushing a button on the lever to hold it down.

    • 2

Place the ATV's transmission in the neutral (N) position using the transmission selector.

    • 3

Turn the fuel tank valve to the "on" position.

    • 4

Move the choke lever to the "Full On" position.

    • 5

Insert the key in the ignition and turn to the "On" position. Place the engine stop switch in the "On" position.

    • 6

Sit on the ATV and grab the pull start handle with your right hand. Pull back as hard and fast as you can. Repeat until the ATV motor starts.
