How to Make Copper Plated Shots

A small ball of lead used as ammunition for a shotgun is known as a shot. Such shots come in a wide variety of sizes and can even be bunched together and fired as a group. Lead is primarily used in the formation of a shot because it is cheap. However, you can create shots composed of a higher grade of metal through electroplating. During this process, the surface of an expensive metal, like copper, is transferred to that of a cheaper metal, like tin.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase copper plating solution from an online electroplating kit retailer or your nearest arts and crafts store.

    • 2

Put on the gloves and goggles to prevent incidental contact between the solution and your eyes or skin.

    • 3

Fill the beaker with enough copper-plating solution to fully submerge the shot being plated. The beaker should also be large enough to fit the shot and piece of copper plating without them coming in contact with each other. Otherwise, dark stains can appear on the shot or the copper may not plate evenly over the shot's surface.

    • 4

Connect the copper-plating piece to the positively-charged alligator clip and the shot to the negatively-charged alligator clip. Prior to plugging in the wall-mount power adapter, ensure that the clips are not touching. If the clips touch they may short out the power adapter.

    • 5

Plug the power adapter into the nearest power socket and allow the plating process to continue until the shot assumes the physical characteristics of the copper. This can be monitored by looking through the beaker or occasionally removing the shot from the solution for a visual inspection.
