Things You'll Need
Instructions
Look to see if there are metal wedges attached to the top of the ax handle. Pull out the metal wedges with pliers to reuse the handle.
Trim the edges at the top of the handle with a rasp, if necessary, to fit the new ax head. The opening of the ax head should fit snugly on the handle.
Apply linseed oil to the top of the ax handle with a clean cloth or rag.
Position the handle into the opening of the ax head. Strike the bottom of the handle with the rubber mallet. This will wedge the handle into the ax head.
Insert a metal wedge into the eye of the ax. Strike the metal wedge using the hand-held sledge to secure the ax head to the handle. Add a second metal wedge if the ax head is loose on the handle.
