How to Mold a Screen to a Pipe

Pipe smokers know that the key to a quality pipe is often the screen that's placed inside it. Loose, broken or even missing screens can cause you to suck tobacco into your mouth. You need to clean and maintain your pipe, in addition to changing and fitting the screen properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a screen from your local tobacconist or pipe store. You can also use common faucet screens from a hardware store if nothing else is available.

    • 2

Trim off excess portions of the screen with scissors if you have a smaller pipe. As a rule, you'll want the screen slightly larger than the hole in the bowl of your pipe.

    • 3

Hold the screen so that it is on the cusp of your pointer finger and bends. Balance it on either side with your thumb and middle finger.

    • 4

Press the screen down into the bowl. Push down until the screen sticks in place.

    • 5

Even out the screen by pressing down a side that is sticking up. The screen should form a bow covering the hole and a portion of the side in the bowl.

    • 6

Load the pipe with tobacco. Press the tobacco onto the screen and then test out the pipe.
