How to Make Miniature Books for a Dollhouse

Like mirrors, jewelry, bedspreads and little dining room tables set for dinner, miniature books complete a dollhouse library or bedroom scene. An appropriately-sized book placed in the hands of a doll inside a dollhouse gives a feeling of life and reality to the make-believe scene. A few simple materials and craft supplies are all that's needed to give your dollhouse a realistic touch with handmade miniature books.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place an old magazine that's about 1/4 inch thick and has a glued binding on a cutting mat. Measure one inch in from the straight edge binding on the magazine. Lay a ruler flat across the magazine at that spot.

    • 2

Use a utility knife to cut through the magazine along the ruler's edge, creating a one-inch section the length of the magazine. Use the bound strip to create your books.

    • 3

Use the utility knife to cut the magazine edge at one or one and a half inch intervals. Trim the height and width of each piece until they look like miniature books and are the desired size.

    • 4

Paint a thin layer of black, red or brown plastic putty onto the front, back and side binding of the miniature book. Let the putty dry completely, about four hours. Paint a title or design on the front of the book or a title on the spine, if desired.

    • 5

Let the book dry completely. Create additional books as needed and place them in your dollhouse on a bookshelf, on a nightstand next to a bed or in a doll's hands.
