How to Make a Big Bang

The phrase "Big Bang" generally refers to the event that most scientists believe caused the origin of the universe, but it can just as easily be any loud bursting noise. Just as the Big Bang was the rapid expansion of the universe, so the loud noise caused by thunder or an explosion is the result of rapidly-expanding air. You can safely make your own little big bang by suddenly releasing compressed air from a paper bag, allowing it to expand with a thunderous pop.

     Blow into a paper lunch bag to inflate it.

     Roll or crumple the open end closed, sealing the bag while still full of air. Hold this end firmly with your left hand.

     Strike the bag sharply with your right hand. This will compress the air inside and then rupture the bag, allowing the air to rapidly expand with a loud bang. Rest the bag against a solid object such as a table while striking it if you have difficulty making it burst.
