How to Make an Origami Divine Dragon

In his book, Works of Satoshi Kamiya, Satashi Kimiya, a master origami designer, details a long list of steps to create his masterpiece, Bahamut, the divine dragon. Some of these steps include overlapping folds that look like scales. Unlike the simple dragon, which requires only a few folds, the divine dragon is a challenge for novice origami designers. With some practice you can create your version of the divine dragon -- though not as detailed as Kamiya's.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with an origami bird base. The origami bird base is a diamond shaped two-surface base and is one of the traditional origami bases. When you look at it, you should have a diamond over a diamond shape.

    • 2

Fold the rear flap downwards and then back. The upper diamond should now be divided into two corners, corner "A" and corner "B." Fold corner "A" upwards while folding the corner "B" first backward then downward. You should now have a shape that looks like a kite with a beak.

    • 3

Take the left end of the kite shaped structure and fold it from left to right till the start of the beak. Once the fold is complete, the paper should look like an open book that folds downward on both sides. Divide the book into four halves by opening the fold in the middle. It is just like opening a book followed by the folding of the top left half.

    • 4

Fold the right side of the paper vertically to form the first wing and repeat the process with the paper underneath to make the second wing. Take the bottom left side of the upper surface and fold it. Repeat the process with the surface underneath. Take the folded left hand side of the book and fold it in a way as to make two small triangles while leaving some surface unfolded. Take the unfolded portion and form the dragon's neck with it.

    • 5

Reverse-fold the unfolded portion to form the mouth of the dragon. Reverse-fold the right side of the surface to form the tail of the dragon. You now have a model of the divine dragon. However, to make it your dragon come alive pleat the wings back and forth to give out the impression that they're swaying. For added perception of flight, repeat the procedure on the wings until they stand out.
