How to Make a Buzzer Circuit

A buzzer is an electric or electromechanical device that makes a continuous sound when you connect it to electricity. One kind of buzzer has an electromagnet that pulls a switch contact against a spring when energized. When the contact closes, it turns the current off, and the spring pulls it back, turning it on again. This cycle repeats rapidly so it makes a loud buzzing noise. Other kinds produce an electronic tone through a speaker. You can make a useful buzzer circuit with a switch, some hook-up wire and a battery.

Things You'll Need

  • 6-volt lantern battery with screw terminals
  • Single-pole, single-throw, momentary action push-button switch
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • 6-volt DC buzzer
  • 12-inch piece of 22-gauge hook-up wire

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the screw terminals of the lantern battery with your fingers. Use a screwdriver to loosen the terminals of the push-button switch.

    • 2

Wrap the end of the red wire of the DC buzzer around the positive screw terminal of the lantern battery. Connect the end of the black buzzer wire to one terminal of the pushbutton switch.

    • 3

Connect one end of one 22-gauge wire to the unconnected terminal of the push-button switch. Tighten both terminals of the switch with the screwdriver. Wrap the other end of the wire around the battery's negative screw terminal.
