How to Melt Gold in a Stainless Mold

The melting and molding of gold is a practice that dates back thousands of years. From medieval times to the American gold rush of the mid 19th century, people have always revered gold for its luster and durability. Gold has a melting point of about 1,900 degrees Fahrenheit. You can melt your own gold at home with a crucible and a heat source -- and then mold it into a shape with a stainless mold.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your gold into a crucible. Crucibles are usually made of clay, and most clay jars will serve the purpose.

    • 2

Melt your gold. You can do this either by placing the crucible in a forge with a temperature exceeding 1,900 degrees, or by using an acetylene torch. Apply the torch to the outside of the crucible until the gold begins to melt, which it will do quite quickly.

    • 3

Lift the crucible with sturdy metal tongs and pour the gold into your stainless mold. Once the gold cools, it will assume the shape of the mold.
