How to Make a Rattlesnake Tail Knot

The rattlesnake knot is so-called because it looks like a rattlesnake's rattler. According to "The Ashley Book of Knots," it's also known as the over-and-under heaving line knot. Make the rattlesnake knot when you want a knot that's strong but that you can unravel quickly. The knot uses one piece of cord and wraps around itself to create a tri-laced knot. Pull the knot tight as you are working on it so that it stays uniform.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a loop in the middle of your cord. Hold the loop where the two cords come together and hold it in this position so it looks like a tear drop. You want the loose cord that is facing the right side to be over the side that is facing the left. The right piece of cord will be A, the left piece of cord will be B. The left side of the loop will be C and the right side of the loop will be D.

    • 2

Take B and pull it over the A and through the loop. Wrap it around the back side of A and leave the end facing the right side.

    • 3

Take A and pull it over the front of the first loop that was made with B. Bring it under this section and pull it under B, so that B crosses over A.

    • 4

Pull B through the back side of the loop and out so it lands over C.

    • 5

Twist B behind both loop strings and pull it between A and D.

    • 6

Take B and go through the loop again by going over D and through the front of the loop.

    • 7

Pull the string through the loop and wrap it over A, pulling it between D string and A.

    • 8

Bring it through the loop again from behind and wrap it around the C.

    • 9

Continue working the B string around the A, C and D until you have reached the end, or the bottom of the loop.
