How to Make a Watercolor Palette

If you're an artist on the go you probably never leave home without a paint palette, so you need one that is easy to carry around. You can make your own travel watercolor palette that offers all the desirable features of a fancy, expensive store-bought model. This portable palette has a tight-fitting cover to protect your paints from dirt and dust, and it keeps them from drying out. The size is perfect for those times when you need a palette small enough to carry in your pocket or purse. A sweet bonus is the self-contained mixing surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a flat metal mint tin with no embossing on the lid. A tin cover with a perfectly flat inner surface gives you a nice paint mixing area.

    • 2

Paint the inner lid with white appliance enamel paint. Allow it to dry and paint on a second coat. Let it dry thoroughly. This gives you a handy mixing surface.

    • 3

Arrange half-pan cups in the lower portion of the mint tin. Move them around until you're happy with their positions. Take the cups out of the tin and set them to the side.

    • 4

Cover the bottom of the mint tin with strips of double-sided tape.

    • 5

Press the half-pan cups into place on the tape.

    • 6

Squeeze your tube paints into the pans.
