How to Breakdance and Backspin

Breakdancing is the common name for a type of dance that is actually named b-boying or breaking. Invented in the 1970s in New York City, this acrobatic and energetic form of dance is mostly performed to hip hop music. It is not an easy dancing style to pick up; many of the moves are actually influenced by gymnastics. There are many individual dance moves in b-boying. Start by learning popular moves like the flare and head spin before moving on to the backspin.

Instructions

  1. Flare

    • 1

Put your hands on the floor in front of you and legs behind you.

    • 2

Swing your legs around in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction. Lift up your arm to let the legs through.

    • 3

Kick both of your legs high to create a V-shape as you hold your weight with two arms behind your body.

    • 4

Lift up the opposite arm as the legs continue to swing round to the back of the body.

    • 5

Keep repeating these steps for as long as you want the flare to last.

    Head Spin

    • 6

Put on a stocking cap to help you spin.

    • 7

Do a headstand on the floor. Place one hand in front of you and the other behind you.

    • 8

Spread your legs as much as you can without causing discomfort. Quickly close your legs.

    • 9

Use your hands to spin yourself as soon as your feet make contact.

    • 10

Spin on your head as long as you can remain balanced. Build up speed with your hands if you begin to slow down.

    Backspin

    • 11

Lie on your side resting on your elbow so your upper body is propped up.

    • 12

Point the bottom leg straight out in front of you. Bend your other leg so that it points in the opposite direction.

    • 13

Swing the bent leg over the bottom leg until it won't go any further. Keep it low and straighten it out as soon as possible.

    • 14

Swing your top leg all the way around, allowing it to naturally rise. Start following the top leg with the bottom leg as soon as the top one starts to rise.

    • 15

Push with the arm you are resting on once both legs are high in the air.

    • 16

Tuck in your arms and legs and you will begin to spin on your back.
