How to Make an Origami Pokemon Arceus

When paper was first brought to Japan in the sixth century, it was mainly restricted to religious and ceremonial use. Paper is thought to have been introduced by China, though much of origami's history remains a mystery. In 1797, the first origami instruction book was published, the title of which roughly translates to "Thousand Paper Crane Folding." Today, origami is a hobby for people of all backgrounds and ages, and the "Pokemon" character Arceus makes a good intermediate model.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the paper top left-hand corner down to meet the bottom right corner. Fold the left and right corners together, then orient your paper so the longest side is facing up.

    • 2

Open the uppermost layer, and pop the fold open. Collapse this side, so the folded crease from step 1 sits flat along the farthest left edge of the lower layers. Flip the model over and collapse the other side in the same way.

    • 3

Rotate the paper so the point with all the loose ends is facing down. Fold the left and right corners on the top layers in to form a kite shape. Flip the model over and repeat with the second layer.

    • 4

Fold the top triangle forward and backward, creasing it evenly with the top of the corners from Step 3.

    • 5

Pop open the upper layer by the bottom corner. Press the crease from Step 4 and collapse the sides inward so this layer sits flat. Flip the paper over and repeat this on the other side.

    • 6

Fold the left and right corners on the upper layer into the center so the edges meet in the middle and run parallel to each other. Flip the model over and repeat this.

    • 7

Fold the model in half along the center crease. Pull the top point of the upper layer down, reverse the center fold on this piece and crease where this point meets the rest of the model.

    • 8

Reverse the fold again, halfway through the piece from Step 7. Just up from this fold, reverse the fold again to create a pleat.

    • 9

Unfold the center fold of the base of the model. Use the scissors to slit the bottom two points, up to where the points meet the rest of the model. Fold the point underneath the pleat in Step 8 up into the model, so the tabs sit flat beside the center crease.

    • 10

Reverse the folds on the rear points of the model, so they stick up and out at a 45-degree angle. Separate the two points, then fold the points in half so the bottom half sits inside the model.

    • 11

Fold these two tabs back against the body of the model where the tabs meet the main body. Flip the model over so these form the front legs. Reverse the fold on the back legs so the reverse fold forms the back of Arceus.

    • 12

Fold the outer front third of both back legs in on themselves to shape the legs. Reverse the fold on the bottom point of these legs to create a flat foot.

    • 13

Lightly open the back top of Arceus's body and pull out the right and left tabs. Use the scissors to slit the tabs up to the model's main body. Fold the tab back into model's back so it sticks out toward the head at a 45-degree angle.

    • 14

Slit the tabs horizontally along the back of the model, from the inside of the tab to the outside. Return the tabs to the 45-degree angle crease. Fold the tabs in two so they fan out.

    • 15

Roll the bottom layer of the tabs from Step 14 into a half circle, then roll the top tabs down to meet the bottom. This will form the main body of Arceus -- set this model aside.

    • 16

Cut a strip of paper about 1 inch wide and 3 1/2 inches long. Pinch the middle of the strip and collapse it so the top comes to an even, triangular point. Fold both the upper and lower layers on the right-hand side inward.

    • 17

Fold the bottom layers up on both sides so the upper edge runs along the top edge.

    • 18

Fold the top edges down, like the wings of a paper airplane. Fold the rear corners up to complete the tail. Insert this piece into the rear center crease along Arceus's back.
