How to Change Rods on Starrett Depth Micrometers

Depth micrometers are used to measured the distance from one surface down to another. They can be used to measure from any flat surface to another (up, sideways, diagonally) as long as you have a flat surface from which to start. A typical depth micrometer measures from zero to 1-inch but can be utilized for other distances by changing the measuring rod. Starrett is a well-known manufacturer of precision measuring devices.

Instructions

    • 1

With the zero to 1-inch rod in the Starrett micrometer, set the micrometer on a flat surface and zero out the rod by turning the adjustment knob lightly until the rod bottoms out on the surface. The measurement should read .000. If it does not, use the spanner wrench and adjust the depth micrometer according to the Starrett directions for zeroing it out.

    • 2

Lightly grasp the body of the micrometer (where the measurement scale is) with one hand. With your other hand, turn the adjustment knob counterclockwise to remove it from the depth micrometer. You will see the black top of the rod.

    • 3

Set the adjustment knob aside and remove the rod by pulling it lightly upward and out of the depth micrometer. The rods only sit on edge of the micrometer body and are held in place and firm by the adjustment knob. All you have to do with the knob off is pull the rod out.

    • 4

Use a scale (a thin, metal ruler used by toolmakers) to estimate the measurement that you will be taking. You only need to know the distance within 1 inch. For instance, between 3 inches and 4 inches. Then, choose the correct rod to place into the Starrett depth micrometer.

    • 5

Slide the rod into place and replace the adjustment knob, turning it lightly but setting it firmly in place. You are now ready to take your measurement.
