How to Start a Diary to Help to Transfer Your Thoughts to Paper

By starting a diary, you can not only record your thoughts and experiences for the day but also your ideas and inspirations. Your journal serves as a private and safe space where you can go to express yourself honestly --- without judgment. While it can be hard to get into the habit of writing down your thoughts, the more frequently you do it, the easier it becomes. To get started, you will need a notebook, pen and a little dedication.

Instructions

    • 1

Select your diary. Your journal can be as simple as a spiral bound notebook or as elaborate as a hardcover diary with a lock. The only thing that matters is that you opt for something with which you are comfortable. From the look of the cover to the feel of the paper, choose something that you want to write in.

    • 2

Get a writing instrument. As with the diary itself, just about anything will work but you may feel more motivated to write with tools that feel good in your hand. Choose a pen or pencil that flows well over the paper.

    • 3

Start writing. Express yourself freely in your diary without worrying about neatness, spelling or grammar. Your diary is just for you; so, do not be hampered by trying to follow all the writing rules you learned in school.

    • 4

Carry the diary with you, so that you can write things down immediately. You never know when you will want to jot something down; you might forget the idea before you get home. However, if losing it concerns you, leave your diary somewhere secure.

    • 5

Dedicate a period of time each day for writing in your diary. Set aside a few uninterrupted minutes every day to reflect and record whatever comes to you.
