How to Make Wooden Ski Bindings

Vintage wooden skis that were used for cross-county travel do not have modern bindings which secure the boot to the ski. These skis have a binding that is made of a leather or rawhide. If you are making vintage wood skis for cross-county travel, a similar type of binding can be used. To do this, you will first need to find the leather or rawhide to use for the binding.

Things You'll Need

  • Ski boot
  • Measuring tape
  • Rawhide strap
  • Leather punch
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around the center of the ski boot at the foot with the tape measure. Make a note of the measurement.

    • 2

Transfer the measurement in Step 1 to the rawhide strap. Cut two pieces of rawhide strap to the measurement of the ski boot.

    • 3

Place the rawhide strap over the top at the center of the wood ski. Align the strap so it is equal in length on each side of the ski.

    • 4

Make a mark for two holes on the rawhide. Repeat this step on the second rawhide piece. Remove the pieces of rawhide from the ski.

    • 5

Make a hole in the ski using the leather punch and a hammer. Position the leather punch over each mark and then strike it with the hammer.

    • 6

Place each leather strap back over the wood ski. Insert a screw into each hole and then tighten using the power drill.
