How to Remove Dendrites in a NiCad

NiCad's are the least expensive rechargeable battery -- one factor accounting for their popularity. However, you do need to look after them as they are susceptible to charging problems if you don't fully cycle the battery, meaning a full discharge and recharge. Dendrites in a NiCad battery can occur if the battery isn't discharged regularly. Dendrites form on the end of the crystals inside the battery, causing a buildup of pressure and reducing the ability of the battery to retain a full charge. But don't despair; you can usually remove dendrite growth in a battery.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your NiCad battery into the battery charger. Turn on the charger and leave to charge until the battery charger indicates the battery is fully charged. You need a battery that's a fully charged as possible to remove dendrites.

    • 2

Turn off the charger and remove the battery. Put the battery in the device it usually powers.

    • 3

Turn on the device. It's important you discharge the NiCad slowly; if the device has power settings, ensure the device is set to the lowest power level. For example, if it's mechanical, set it to the slowest rate. If it's electronic, just turn it on so one or two applications are running. Allow the device to run until it stops or automatically turns off.

    • 4

Remove the battery and let it sit for about 30 minutes.

    • 5

Replace the battery into the device. Turn on the device at the same level as before. You now need to perform a deep discharge. This means removing all the remaining energy from the battery slowly. Allow the device to operate until it stops or turns off.

    • 6

Remove the battery and leave it to sit for 10 minutes, then replace the battery and turn on the device again. Repeat this procedure until the device doesn't turn on. It could be several more times, before the battery is fully discharged.

    • 7

Place the battery back into the battery charger. Charge until it's full. Put the battery back into the device again and repeat the complete process, including charging the battery, once it's fully discharged. It's best to repeat this at least two times; three is better.
