How to Do an All Nighter and Survive the Next Day

Pulling an "all-nighter" by staying up through the entire night may seem challenging or even overwhelming for those with busy lives and schedules during the daytime. For those in need of additional time to complete a project or study, staying up all night will give you extra hours to do so. With preparation and planning, staying up all night to recover throughout the following day is possible for just about anyone with enough dedication.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a list of the objectives you wish to accomplish while pulling an all nighter, including a ranking of importance or a due date with each one. Organize the list to create a schedule for the time you will dedicate to completing each task or activity you have planned. Allow time for eating and drinking to keep your body going throughout the night.

    • 2

Purchase energy drinks or drink caffeinated drinks including coffee or soda to keep yourself energized if you do not think you will make it all night. Although too much caffeine is unhealthy, moderate doses of it will help keep you alert and awake. Eat foods high in protein throughout the night including beans, chicken and cheese.

    • 3

Avoid doing work or spending your time in your bedroom, on your bed or on another comfortable couch or chair, as getting too comfortable may encourage you to give in and sleep before making it through the night.

    • 4

Exercise or go for a walk when you feel tired or simply take a break by going outside for a few minutes to refresh yourself and to move around a bit. Complete sets of sit-ups or jumping jacks to help keep your blood flowing while staying awake.

    • 5

Invite a friend to join you for the night so you can keep each other motivated to stay awake. Having a friend with you encourages more social interaction, distracting you from sleeping and feeling tired.

    • 6

Take quick naps the following day, if possible, incorporating at least a 10-minute nap to start off your day. Go outside in the sunshine to get fresh air and to help feel rejuvenated even after the lack of sleep you endured.

    • 7

Exercise during the following day to keep your blood pumping and your body going to stay awake.
