How to Take a Bent Crank Set Off

Bicyclists realize that when a serious injury to a crank set results in a bent crank or chain ring, there is just no saving it. The injured crank must be removed. Removing the crank is the easy part. The crank could be given to a specialist for repair, but more than likely the only thing left for this crank set is the infamous scrap metal pile where so many ruined bicycle parts go.

Things You'll Need

  • Allen key or 14 mm socket wrench
  • Crank Puller
  • 16 mm open end wrench
  • Adjustable wrench
  • WD-40

Instructions

  1. Twist and Pull

    • 1

Coat any threaded areas with WD-40 and let it set for a few minutes to loosen any stuck parts. Remove the chain by shifting the front derailleur to the smallest chain ring. Remove the chain and rest it on the bottom bracket housing, so it is out of the way.

    • 2

Loosen the crank set with an Allen key or 14-mm socket wrench. Turn counterclockwise while holding the crank arm for leverage.

    • 3

Push and turn the crank puller clockwise to thread the external threads into the crank arm. Once threaded, apply the adjustable wrench to the external flat portion of the crank puller, and turn the internal driver clockwise until it stops turning.

    • 4

Use a 16-mm wrench to turn the driver clockwise until the crank arm pulls free of the spindle. Repeat this process on the other side to remove the other crank.

    • 5

Remove any bent chain rings if necessary using the appropriately sized Allen wrench, turning counterclockwise.
