How to Make a Wood Mold to Lay Fiberglass Over

Making a copy of an object requires a mold. Depending on the size of the mold, you may need to use a wood frame. If a two-part mold is required, a parting board will be needed. You can make wood frames or a parting board from plywood or other scrap wood. To do this, the proper measurements of the object for the mold will be required.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Plywood
  • Circular saw
  • Jigsaw
  • Table saw

Instructions

  1. Cutting a Frame

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the object you need to mold with fiberglass with a tape measure.

    • 2

Transfer the measurement to a piece of plywood and draw an outline by using a pencil.

    • 3

Drill a hole at each corner of the outline with the power drill. Insert the blade of the jigsaw into a hole and cut along the outline.

    • 4

Place the plywood mold over the object.

    Making a Parting Board

    • 5

Measure the height of the object with the tape measure. Note the height on a piece of paper.

    • 6

Transfer the width to two pieces of scrap wood. Cut the wood to the height of the object with the table saw.

    • 7

Measure the width of the two pieces and add this measurement to the width in Step 1. Cut a second piece of scrap wood to this width.

    • 8

Apply wood glue to the top edges of the two pieces you cut in Step 2. Glue these pieces to the bottom of the larger piece in Step 3 with wood glue to make a "U" shape.

    • 9

Place the parting board over the object.
