How to Turn Spray Paint Into Bottle Form

Turning spray paint into bottle form has a very clear advantage: there are colors of spray paint that are not available in airbrush or any other paint medium. Spray paint is already perfectly thinned for airbrush use, but the can's pressure keeps you from simply opening it and pouring out the paint. The solution is to decant the paint into a glass bottle, allowing you to use it in an airbrush with much greater control.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray paint can
  • Bendy straw
  • Scissors
  • Masking tape
  • Jar with lid
  • Plastic wrap

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the long end of a large bendy straw down to 2 inches past the bend with a sharp pair of scissors.

    • 2

Attach the cut end of the straw to the spray paint can's nozzle with masking tape. Attach the tape to one side of the straw, then wrap it around the nozzle and attach it to the other side of the straw. Add an additional piece to the top of the straw and nozzle.

    • 3

Bend the other end of the straw down.

    • 4

Shake the spray paint can for 60 seconds.

    • 5

Cover a glass jar with plastic wrap.

    • 6

Poke a hole in the center of the plastic wrap with the straw attached to the spray paint can.

    • 7

Gently press the spray paint can's nozzle. The paint will hit the bend in the straw and condense, dripping into the jar. The plastic wrap keeps the paint and fumes from billowing out.

    • 8

Fill the jar no more than two-thirds of the way full.

    • 9

Let the jar sit open for one hour to allow any residual propellant to boil away. The paint is fairly unstable until all of the propellant is gone.

    • 10

Screw the lid onto the jar. You can now use the paint to airbrush whenever you need it.
