How to Make an Origami Dinosaur Head

Paper was originally invented in China, but was first introduced to Japan in the early seventh century. At first, paper was restricted for religious use, with some paper-folding techniques used in sending formal letters. Between 1603 and 1868, known as the Edo period, paper-folding rose to prominence as both a hobby and decoration. An origami dinosaur head is a relatively simple shape, and requires only a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the top edge to the bottom, so the crease indents into the paper (valley fold). Unfold and then valley fold bottom edge to the center, so the edge sits evenly with the crease.

    • 2

Valley fold the bottom two layers over on the center crease. This should leave one quarter of the paper unfolded. Flip the paper over.

    • 3

Fold the bottom right hand corner up, about a third of the way up the model. Fold the top right corner down, so the edge meets the top edge of the first corner. Repeat this step on the left-hand side of the paper.

    • 4

Fold the top flap down, so the crease is even with the top of the bottom layers.

    • 5

Flip the paper over, and then valley fold the left and right corner together. Unfold, and then orient the short top so it faces down. Make a small tear along the center crease.

    • 6

Valley-fold the upper most layer back; then flip the paper over. Valley-fold the new upper most layer back as well.

    • 7

Insert your finger between the layers at the center tear, and pop the model open. Bring the left and right corners together to form the mouth, lightly creasing the back of the dinosaur head. Draw eyes onto your dinosaur head if desired.
