How to Make a Rectangle Loom

Weaving can be an entertaining hobby for children and adults alike. Unfortunately, the price tag on most weaving looms might cause a little bit of sticker shock for the casual enthusiast. Never fear, you can still practice weaving without spending the money for a large loom by just making your own! Make a simple rectangular weaving loom and use it to weave various items, such as place mats and wall hangings.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose four pieces of wood: two longer and two shorter pieces. The size of your wood will determine the size of your loom, which in turn determines the size of your woven pieces. The wood you choose should be at least 2 inches wide and 1 inch thick.

    • 2

Place the two longer pieces parallel to each other and position the shorter pieces across the top and bottom, layering the ends of these just on top of the ends of the longer pieces. The four pieces together should form a rectangle.

    • 3

Attach the wood pieces together at the four corners using a hammer and nails. Place at least two nails in each corner, hammering down through the top pieces of wood and into the bottom pieces to secure the frame of the loom.

    • 4

Measure across the top of the loom, placing a pencil mark at every 1/2 inch across the width of the top piece of wood. Center your marks vertically on the wood. Repeat this across the bottom of the loom.

    • 5

Hammer a small nail into the loom at each pencil mark. Leave approximately 1/2 inch of the nail sticking out above the loom. These nails will become the warp pegs for your loom.
