How to Make a Drum Enclosure

Almost any band would consider itself incomplete without a drummer and drum set. The drummer has the important role of keeping the beat of the music consistent for the other musicians. However, when a band is playing music in a venue that has not been designed to support the acoustics of a drum set, the beat of the drum can overpower the other instruments. A drum enclosure is a thermoplastic shield that surrounds the drum set. It minimizes the volume of the drums, without inhibiting the drummer from playing with the force that he needs to.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how many screens your drum enclosure will need. A smaller drum set with four to five pieces will need four screens. Anything larger than this will need five screens.

    • 2

Lay out the drum set in the exact way it will be set up for performances. Measure the length of the set from the farthest point left to the farthest point right. Next, measure the height of the tallest piece of the drum set.

    • 3

Take the drum set length measurement and add five feet to it. Divide this number by the number of screens your drum enclosure will have. This is the length that the four thermoplastic pieces will need to be cut. Take the height of the tallest piece of your drum set and add eight inches to it. This will be the height of each thermoplastic piece.

    • 4

Purchase 1/4 inch thick thermoplastic pieces from a hardware store. Bring the screen measurements with you. The hardware store will have the appropriate equipment to custom cut the thermoplastic.

    • 5

Select hinges, nuts, and bolts to attach the screens together. If you are making a four screened shield, you will need six hinges. If you are making a five screened shield, you will need eight hinges.

    • 6

Place two pieces of thermoplastic next to each other on top of a foam board. Attach the screens together, placing the first hinge six inches from the top of the thermoplastic. The hinge will be on the right side of the first piece, and the left side of the second piece. Place another hinge six inches from the bottom of the thermoplastic and repeat this step.

    • 7

Attach the third and fourth thermoplastic screens to the second screen using the same method as above. If there is a fifth screen, continue using the same process.

    • 8

Lift up the completed drum shield and position it around your drum set.
