A DIY RC Transmitter Case

Remote-controlled vehicles and aircraft require a specially designed radio system. Operators use the system to communicate and control the on-board servos and other devices, such as an electronic speed control for electric motors. Construct a do-it-yourself radio transmitter case to help reduce the chance of damage to the transmitter during transport or when storing your RC equipment.

Things You'll Need

  • Adequate size cardboard or plastic box container
  • Foam rubber packing material
  • Measuring tape
  • Permanent marker
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a cardboard or plastic box that will accommodate your transmitter. For more durability, use a hinged, plastic carrying case.

    • 2

Measure the inside length, width and height of the box. Transfer the inside measurements of the box to the foam rubber with a permanent marker.

    • 3

Cut the foam rubber to the required inside dimensions for the box, using scissors. Test-fit the foam rubber in your box. Trim additional material off the foam rubber if necessary.

    • 4

Unscrew the antenna from the transmitter, if possible, to provide additional protection and reduce the need for a larger storage box. Some transmitters do not feature a removable antenna, depending on the type, make or model.

    • 5

Center the transmitter on top of the foam rubber. Trace the exterior outline of the transmitter, using the permanent marker.

    • 6

Cut out the traced portion of the foam rubber with a sharp hobby knife. Test-fit the transmitter, which should fit snugly within the cut-out but not warp the exterior dimensions of the foam rubber. Shave off any excess foam rubber material for a better fit, if necessary.

    • 7

Trace and cut out a small slot next to the transmitter to accommodate the removed antenna, if applicable. If a large gap exists between the exposed portions of the transmitter and the top of the case, fashion a small foam rubber insert to cover the exposed area. The insert will prevent the transmitter from moving back-and-forth within the box.
