Handles Made With PVC Pipes

PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is among the most common industrial thermoplastics. Manufacturers mold PVC into a wide variety of products, such as pipes for residential sprinkler systems. Where iron pipes used to be the standard, PVC pipes have become ubiquitous. In fact, the plastic pipes have proved so versatile that people have adapted them for a variety of other applications.
  1. A Building System

    • PVC sprinkler pipe isn't just conduit to transport water; it can be used as a structural building system. Straight PVC pipe and a variety of connectors of different angles are readily available at home supply stores. Combined with easy-to-use PVC cement with built-in applicators, a hacksaw is the only tool that's needed to build all kinds of structures, frames, furniture, shelves or even tools.

    Fixed Handles

    • A simple television tray is one example of an easy-to-make PVC project. For example, if you want to make a TV tray or laptop work tray, building it with wood requires some woodworking experience. But you can make a simple tray frame from PVC, including handles, even if you've never build anything before. You splice the handles into the perimeter of the tray by using "T" connectors to extend the handle armatures, then "L" connecters to attach the armatures with the actual handle piece.

    Rotating Handles

    • Using this construction method of cutting straight lengths of PVC pipe and gluing them into different types of connectors doesn't limit you to a fixed handle where the handle grip is glued in place. For example, you might have a straight section pass completely through "T" connectors, without cementing the handle piece. Then, cement end caps on the handle. This will allow it to rotate freely without falling out of the handle supports.

    Handle and Rope

    • Another good approach to PVC handles is similar to plastic handles used on rope and rigid-wire bucket handles. In this case rope will provide the structure of the handle. You can drill holes in whatever you want to lift, thread rope through the holes and tie a know on one side, so the rope can't pull through. Before you thread the second end of the rope, thread it through a section of PVC pipe about the width of your hand. This will give you a firm, more ergonomic handle to grasp than the loose rope, which is likely to dig into your skin.
