How to Build a Portable Fold-Up Ice Fishing Shanty

A portable ice fishing shanty can be built by first constructing a wood frame. To decrease the weight of the shanty, use a vinyl tarp for the cover. This enables you to easily transport the shanty to a lake by placing it in the bed of your truck or on a trailer.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Two 4-foot by 8-foot plywood sheets
  • 2-inch by 4-inch boards
  • Power drill
  • Screws
  • Vinyl tarp
  • Staple gun

Instructions

    • 1

Measure two 4-foot by 8-foot plywood sheets to 3 feet wide by 4 feet high with the tape measure. Cut the plywood to this size with the circular saw.

    • 2

Measure and cut a 2-foot by 3-foot door on one piece of plywood.

    • 3

Measure and cut two 2-inch by 4-inch boards to 5 feet. Measure and cut two additional 2-inch by 4-inch boards to 3 feet.

    • 4

Place two 3-foot long 2-inch by 4-inch boards along the top of the plywood sheets. Secure the 2-inch by 4-inch boards to the plywood sheets with screws using the power drill.

    • 5

Position the two 5-foot long 2-inch by 4-inch boards 3 feet apart on the ground. Make sure that the long end of the boards are on the ground.

    • 6

Place the cut pieces of plywood on each end of the 2-inch by 4-inch boards. Secure a hinge to each 2-inch by 4-inch board and the plywood with screws.

    • 7

Set the door in place and secure it to the plywood with hinges.

    • 8

Place the vinyl tarp over the top of the wood frame. Secure one end of the tarp to a 2-inch by 4-inch at the bottom of the frame with the staple gun. Pull the tarp taught and secure it to the other pieces of 2-inch by 4-inch.
