How to Use a Box Compass

A box compass is a throwback to the old days when compasses were the primary method of determining your location. It is essentially a large compass set into a wooden box -- mahogany was often used for the pricier models -- with either a hinged or pop-off lid. A box compass functions in the same manner as all compasses.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the box compass on a flat surface.

    • 2

Remove or lift the box's lid.

    • 3

Examine the face of compass to determine the directions. The "N" pointer represents "north," and will always point in that direction, regardless of where the compass is positioned. Use the "north" pointer to determine the other directions -- east, west, south. Compare north on a map to determine which landmarks are relevant to your current position.
