How to Make a Mickey Beanie

The iconic cartoon character Mickey Mouse inspired a number of hats, all adorned with two round ears. Unlike the rough Mickey Mouse hats found at amusement parks, a beanie uses soft fabric and keeps your head warm. By adding cardboard to the fabric ears of your beanie, you force the ears to stand up straight, emulating the classic Mickey Mouse ears. If you want to keep your project green, recycle an old sweater instead of purchasing new fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of your head, at its widest part. Measure your head, from the bottom of your forehead to the very top of your neck. Call this measurement "height." Divide each measurement by two.

    • 2

Draw a line, the width of your circumference measurement. Draw a vertical line, as long as your "height" measurement. Draw a second "height" line on the opposite side of the horizontal line. Connect the two vertical lines with a curved line. The curved line's peak should be about 2 inches above the longest "height" line. This is your beanie pattern.

    • 3

Trace the pattern onto black fabric, using chalk. Cut the beanie pattern out of the fabric. Trace the pattern and cut it out again.

    • 4

Turn the fabric inside-out. Sew the two pieces of fabric together, using a sewing machine.

    • 5

Draw two semi-circles, 2 to 4 inches wide, on cardboard. Cut out the semi-circle.

    • 6

Place the cardboard on the fabric. Trace a slightly larger version of the shape, using chalk. Cut the semi-circles from the fabric.

    • 7

Set the cardboard semi-circle on the fabric semi-circle, with the colored side of the fabric facing you. Place a second fabric semi-circle over the cardboard semi-circle, with the fabric facing the table. Sew the two semi-circles together. Remove the cardboard and turn the ear inside-out.

    • 8

Push the cardboard into the ear. Sew the front edge of the ear to the beanie, in front of the beanie's seam. Sew the back edge of the ear to the beaning, behind the beanie's seams.

    • 9

Add the second ear to the beanie, on the top-left side of the beanie.
