How to Hook a Bit to a Bridle

Bits are metal, bone or wooden bars, or sometimes two connected bars, that fit into a horse's mouth. The rider uses the bit to control and communicate with the horse. Bits have at least one ring on each end. Some bits, called "curb bits," are centered in a metal frame so there are two rings on each end of the bit. Both the harness that fits over the horse's face, called the bridle, and the reins, the long straps the rider uses to control the horse, attach to these rings.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang the bridle from a peg or nail so that it hangs flat. Position the bit so that the curve of the bit faces out or up, not in.

    • 2

Working on one side at a time, tie a "snaffle bit" -- a bit with one ring on each end -- to the bottom bands in the leather bridle by pushing a leather or nylon string through both the ring on the end of a snaffle bit and the leather loop on the bottom of the bridle. Tie the bridle to the upper two rings of a curb bit.

    • 3

Tie the reins to a snaffle bit after attaching the bridle. Attach reins to the lower two rings of curb bits.
