How to Anchor a Picture to Glass

Anchor a picture to glass using a mat as a spacer. Paper is often damaged from directly touching glass in a frame. Space provides an area that keeps tiny dust particles from building up and adhering the picture to the glass surface. The Smithsonian Institute recommends using UF-3 Plexiglas as a glazing material because it filters ninety eight percent of ultraviolet radiation. Thin paper may require regular glass to prevent flaking of medium from the static electricity in Plexiglas. All materials must be acid free or pH neutral.

Things You'll Need

  • Plexiglas glazing
  • Glass or Plexiglas cleaner
  • Lint-free rag
  • Acid free matting
  • Acid-free corrugated board

Instructions

    • 1

Work in a clean room with little dust and good lighting. Humidity of forty five to fifty percent is preferred.

    • 2

Acclimate the picture to the room's environment for an hour.

    • 3

Clean the glass or Plexiglas with a cleaner and lint-free rag. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

    • 4

Mat the picture with acid free matting, in a size and color that complement the picture.

    • 5

Cut an acid-free corrugated backing and polyester moisture film to the same dimensions as your picture. Use a sharp scissors or a razor blade knife.

    • 6

Place the corrugated cardboard on a flat table and top it with the polyester film and the matted picture. Lay the cleaned glass or Plexiglas over all these layers.

    • 7

Seal all the layers together with inert pressure-sensitive tape on all sides. Adhere three strips of tape on each side. Overlap the glass with 1/8-inch of tape and wrap it around all the layers. Attach another piece of tape over the back edge of this first tape strip and place a third piece over the edge of this and around the cardboard backing.
