How to Wire a Mystery ESC

The Mystery ESC is a brushless motor speed controller. It is typically used in radio-controlled airplanes or cars to deliver the correct power to the motor. It does this by receiving information from the throttle control and power from the battery then converting that into the correct DC power delivered to the motor. Wiring these connections is done by soldering. If you are new to soldering, practice with some scrap wires before you begin work.

Things You'll Need

  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Soldering gun
  • Rosin core solder
  • Electrical tape

Instructions

    • 1

Position the Mystery ESC face up. The two connections on the left side, the black and red wires, are connected to the battery. The three connections on the right side, the red wires, are connected to the brushless motor's wires. The last wire, with the harness on the end, plugs into the controller unit.

    • 2

Twist together the black wire that connects to the battery with the negative black wire from the battery. Hold the wires with needle-nose pliers and apply the soldering iron to the bare metal wires. Once the connection is hot, touch the rosin core solder to the bare wire, not the iron. Allow the solder to melt around the connection. Let the solder cool for several minutes then wrap the connection in electrical tape.

    • 3

Solder the red wire connected to the battery to the positive red wire from the battery.

    • 4

Solder each of the red motor wires to each of the brushless motor's three wires. It doesn't matter which wires you connect together.

    • 5

Plug the last wire into the control unit for the radio-controlled device.
