How to Insert the Nib in Old Tyme Writing Set

Quills are feathered pens that need to be dipped in ink before you write with them. Often fancy, and associated with famed scribblers like William Shakespeare, there aren't many people who use quills except for their novelty value. If you use the Olde Tyme Writing Set, which comes with a quill and a variety of nibs, then you can get a lot of use out of it. It does pay to know how to remove the nibs, though.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe any ink off of your nib with a clean cloth. Clean it so that you don't smear ink all over your fingers or drip it onto your clothes when changing out your nibs.

    • 2

Put a piece of clear tape onto your nib. The tape will help protect the steel from the oils on your fingers, and it will give you a firmer grip on the nib than you might otherwise have.

    • 3

Tug the nib out gently, pulling and wiggling it out of your quill. The quill is just a holder for the nib, and it doesn't have an ink reservoir or anything else to worry about once the nib is removed.

    • 4

Replace the old nib with a new one. As with the original nib, use a piece of clear tape to get a good grip on the new nib. Push it in where the old nib was until it's firmly gripped by the quill.
