How to Maintain Rosewood Fretboard

Take a few minutes to keep your instrument in top condition the next time you change your strings. Constant contact with oils from your hands and fingers causes a buildup of dirt on frequently used areas of your fretboard, while a loss of natural oils causes areas with less contact to dry out. Keep your rosewood fretboard attractive and in good playing condition with a few simple routine steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Cotton cloth
  • Tung oil

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the strings. Cleaning and maintaining your fretboard is best done while changing strings. Change your strings once each month during periods of heavy use. Change the strings at least annually when the instrument is not in use to prevent damage from corrosion.

    • 2

Clean the entire fingerboard with a cotton cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. The alcohol removes accumulated oil and dirt from the board and does not damage the guitar's finish.

    • 3

Pour a small amount of tung oil directly onto the fretboard. Use a clean cotton cloth to spread the oil evenly across the surface.

    • 4

Rub the oil into the fretboard with a circular motion. Remove any excess with a clean cloth.

    • 5

Allow the oil to dry for 15 to 20 minutes before re-stringing the instrument.
