How to Make 3D Cities Out of Legos

Creating a 3D Lego city involves building lots of skyscrapers. Windowed rooms that can be stacked vertically are the best small components for the tall buildings of your Lego city. Other elements such as roads, fences and trees are made especially by the Lego company, and can be bought from its website or built with small Lego bricks. Lego also sells starter packs full of specialized bricks for everything from airports to medieval knights.

Instructions

  1. Building Skyscrapers

    • 1

Gather several flat, wide plates for the bases of all of your buildings. Lego plates vary in size and are as small as 1 by 1 inch, but you want something significantly wider and flatter if you're planning to build a tall building of Legos.

    • 2

Use long 2-by-8 inch bricks to form the shape of your room. Build upward, leaving spaces in your walls to allow for windows and doors. Buy window and door bricks from the Lego website if desired. Spruce up the appearance of your building by modifying the walls with arch or column bricks. Leave larger spaces to add bridges or walkways from other buildings once you've decided on a layout for your city.

    • 3

Complete the first floor of your building by closing the gaps above your windows and doors with Lego bricks. Continue building upward until the walls are as high as you want. Use another long and wide Lego plate as your roof or ceiling.

    • 4

Add more rooms on top of the first room until your skyscraper is finished. Stacking slightly smaller rooms on top of each other adds stability to the structure. When finished, build a roof using Lego roof tiles or just regular Lego bricks stacked diagonally, forming a triangular roof.

    City Blocks

    • 5

Build skyscrapers and smaller buildings in the same style described in Section 1, spacing them apart. The spaces in between them will function as roads if no straight or crossroad plates are available.

    • 6

Fill these roads with Lego vehicles built from smaller Lego bricks and wheels. You can construct vehicles from smaller bricks and wheel bricks. In the event that your collection lacks windshield and car door bricks, they are available from Lego.com.

    • 7

Accentuate street corners and bottom floor spaces with Lego phone booths or gas pumps. These fixtures can be improvised with Lego bricks if necessary. You can also build or buy park benches, mailboxes and streetlights.

    Culture and Greenery

    • 8

Add Lego trees near the sides of buildings to add plant life. Lego manufactures several types of tree bricks, including palms. If tree bricks are unavailable, build them using brown and green bricks.

    • 9

Gather lots of Lego figures to populate your city. You can modify these figures, using Lego hats and other accessories.

    • 10

Connect buildings to one another on upper levels, using Lego bridges. If you don't have any bridges in your collection, they can be built between buildings using long bricks, 2 by 8 or longer. You can add porches and fire escapes to buildings, using thin plates and Lego handrails.
